Should a Modeling Agency Ever Charge You to Join?
How legitimate modeling agencies make money, which costs are normal, and the green flags to look for before you sign with anyone.
No. A good modeling agency earns money when you get paid for work, not when you sign up. Here's how it should work, so you can recognize a professional agency the moment you see one.
How agencies are supposed to make money
Agencies take a commission, a percentage of what a client pays for a booking. If you don't work, the agency doesn't earn. That keeps everyone focused on the same goal: getting you booked.
Green flags
- No fee to join, no "registration," "portfolio" or "training" charge to be considered.
- A written agreement you can take home and read before signing.
- Every job confirmed in writing: client, location, hours, rate and how the photos or video will be used.
- Clear pay: you know when you'll be paid, and you get a statement showing each job.
- Safety basics: verified client contacts and someone from the agency you can reach during a job.
- ID checked in person, never sent by text or email, and never your bank details or SSN up front.
Costs that can come up later
Some models choose to pay for extra things on their own, like a personal photographer or new outfits. That should always be your choice, never a requirement to join. Many agencies, including Tat Brat for our founding roster, cover the first professional shoot.
Our promise
Tat Brat will never charge you to join. We earn a commission only when you get paid for a booking, and every job is confirmed in writing. If anyone claiming to be us asks for money, it isn't us. Email tatbratmodeling@gmail.com to check.
